Thai Turkey & Veggie Burger with Almond Butter Chili Sauce

Turkey burgers can be a great-tasting alternative to ground beef burgers. Today's recipe has a delicious Thai twist to it. When it comes to the ground turkey, you could use white or dark meat, but ground dark meat will have more flavor. As you'd expect, the burgers are pictured without the bun. They're delicious without the added starch and gluten. Add a side of roasted Brussels sprouts or a salad for a nutritious, delicious meal. If you have a recipe you'd like to share, please email your recipe and photos to weightloss@lifetimefitness.com.

Will Eating Red Meat Really Kill You?

The news was recently on fire with headlines declaring red meat consumption raises the risk of death. Pretty scary stuff! No doubt, some of those who just heard or read the headlines have become terrified at the thought of eating red meat. Each year a new study seems to say something along these same lines. Though the headlines draw attention, such sensationalized sound bites could be worse for peoples’ health than the information found in the stories they promote.

Before you stick your nose up at sirloin or blow off other cuts of beef, you should understand what the study showed. Even if you just don’t like to eat red meat, you’ll know the truth so you can share it with your friends.

Chocolate Protein Brownies - Low Carb, Gluten Free, Vegan

We often talk about the importance of getting plenty of protein with each meal. For most meals, your protein probably comes from meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs or protein shakes. Of those options, protein shakes tend to be the most portable, but what if you want something that’s protein rich and in solid form? A protein bar can be a nice alternative. However, many protein bars are actually low in protein, or high in carbs, or have a bunch of ingredients you may not want to eat.

That’s why we were excited to get this delicious recipe from Healthy Living How To. These decadent homemade protein bars/brownies are not only low in carbs, but they’re gluten free, dairy free and vegan. We can’t promise they’ll turn out for you if you use different ingredients than those listed, but we can tell you when you make them as recommended, they are delicious.

Try-It Tuesday: Bacon

Bacon is hands-down, one of those most misguided foods of our time.   In fact, whenever I recommend adding it to one’s diet, I’m still surprised by how many people are in disbelief or respond with the silent, “Is she serious?” stare.   Scrutinized for decades, bacon has been given a bad reputation, often leading people to eliminate it completely from their diet.  But bacon is making a major comeback and it has the credentials to do so!  Whether you are a bacon lover or bacon-curious, read on below to find out the DO’s and DON’TS regarding this controversial food.  I hope it helps you decide to bring home the bacon this Tuesday!

Q&A: What should I eat for breakfast?

Hello Tom, I enjoyed reading your most recent article online, and I was hoping you might be able to advise me. I am creating a weight loss plan for myself, and I thought your 3 tips would be a great place for me to start. I read that eating a high protein breakfast is critical, can you please offer a few suggestions? I usually like to make two open faced egg sandwiches with 2 pieces of whole wheat toast, 2 eggs, and 3 slices of turkey bacon divided in between. Occasionally, I will add a tomato slice or a slice of avocado. Is this too heavy? Not enough protein?

Try-It Tuesday: Go Grass-Fed

Have you gone grass-fed yet? This question brought for some fun discussion at my last book club meeting. One of the gals in our club raises and sells grass-fed cattle on her farm (a dietitian’s dream for a best friend!) and had a customer return a recently purchased roast because he swore all he could taste was grass. I had to...
