10 Produce Items to Preserve Now (and How to Use Them Later)

Now is the best time of year to start stocking up on produce!

As we move toward the peak of summer, grocery stores and farmers markets are packed with the widest variety of vibrant and colorful options.

My clients always find it easier to consume their recommended intake of fruits and veggies (9-12 servings) during the warmer months because so many produce items look and taste better as well as cost less.

With a little planning, you can also take advantage of the seasonal abundance now to make healthier eating easier (and cheaper) this fall and winter. Below are my top 10 picks for preserving the season’s best and making good use of them later in the year.

Recipe Round-up: Summer Picnics

The summer season invites us to live outdoors, and meals are no exception. Sometimes that means eating al fresco on the patio. Other times it's eating on the go while we're out "adventuring." Cue the classic summer picnic! There's so much more to pack, however, than the typical sandwich, chip and cookie rundown. (Can anyone say carb overload?) Fortunately, we don't have to abandon our healthy goals for the sake of tradition - or convenience. Check out these ideas for healthy picnic options to fill your basket this weekend.

Recipe Round-up: Late Spring Veggies

While mid-summer bounty garners the most attention, late spring delivers plenty of tasty, nutrient-dense vegetables we can incorporate into our healthy way of eating. These months deliver the first tempting crops of greens, herbs, onions and other “early” veggies. While these days we certainly have the luxury of never being limited to what's in season locally, eating seasonally can encourage us to experiment with new foods - particularly with produce. Whether you're looking to up your veggie intake or interested in trying out more seasonal fare, check out this four-course, spring-oriented menu - from soup to (pine) nuts.

Recipe Round-up: Breakfast

There's something about breakfast that seems to set the course for the day. Certainly, a high carb, low protein breakfast can set us up for a late morning energy crash, which too often descends into a series of bad choices and their consequences. When we begin the day with a healthy, filling choice, however, we've not only nourished our bodies with the right balance, but we've already scored one for success that day. There's something immensely gratifying about being able to chalk up a win right away. For me, I've found it makes it that much easier to say yes to the right choices later and resist temptation when it creeps up. I've fueled my body in the right way, and I've boosted my confidence simultanously. While the possibilities are endless, check out these four recipes that can offer you a better breakfast.

Staff Cooks: Favorite Healthy Cookbooks

A weight loss journey transforms more than our bodies. It can overhaul much of our lifestyle. Our schedules, our pastimes, and our eating habits usually look quite different once we’ve committed to a healthy way of life and made it our own. One of the more creative transformations we see happen with our members is a discovery (or rediscovery) of cooking talent! Maybe food prep was an afterthought before--or a nonissue for those who ate out most of the time. When we adopt the Healthy Way of Eating, we quickly learn that cooking is key to our success. While we needn’t become Iron Chefs, the more skills and bigger repertoire we have, the easier and more enjoyable our healthy eating will be. As much as online and magazine recipes offer in terms of variety, there’s something about an honest-to-goodness, hard cover cookbook to inspire kitchen creativity! With that in mind, check out these favorite cookbook recommendations from our Flourish staff.

Better Barbecues

With summer in full swing, the invitations come flooding in for all kinds of outdoor festivities revolving around food. While these get-togethers can be fun, exciting, and entertaining, they sometimes aren’t so in line with your healthy eating goals. Still, none of us like to be ‘that guest’ who won’t eat what’s being provided. Before you turn down those invitations, think of how you can prepare yourself for the extravaganza and enjoy yourself (and the food!) while you’re there….guilt free, of course.

10 Better Breakfasts to Savor Today

Among the most common questions I get from clients are those that revolve around breakfast—specifically what to eat and whether they even need to bother eating it!  Many people are used to considering breakfast as an optional meal. They don’t have time for it, they claim. They’d rather “save” the calories for later. Others simply aren’t hungry in the morning or dislike breakfast foods in general.  What we have to ask ourselves is ‘why?’  Why wouldn’t we start our day with the best fuel for our bodies? Why wouldn’t we devote just a little time and effort to the meal that will set our metabolic course for the day? Why aren’t we thinking outside the box for more unique breakfast ideas?
