Should I consider the Ketogenic Diet?

TV doctors are talking about it, research journals are publishing dozens of papers on it, and your neighbors may even be trying to sell you products to help you get going on it. The “it” in this case is the ‘ketogenic” diet. And despite what you may be hearing, it’s not new.

Ketogenic diets have been formally used since the 1920’s as a medical treatment strategy (initially for epilepsy) because the effects of such an eating pattern can mimic the effects of fasting (which reportedly has been used to manage “fits” since 500BC)[i].

As you read on, keep in mind that the human body can survive – and even thrive – on a wide range of dietary patterns. In fact, there is evidence to support certain facets of nearly every “diet” out there. Yet, there is not one single diet that should be followed by everyone all the time.
