How nutrient dense was your diet today?

Some foods offer us nothing positive for the calories and artificial ingredients they contain. These are the "empty" options that we want to let go of on the way to better health and successful weight loss.

Sugar Shock

Imagine if your food was tainted with an addictive, dangerous substance without your consent. Now imagine that you were consuming it regularly - several times a day, in fact.

Over time, it caused you to inch closer and closer to a life of high blood pressure medication, heart attack scares, and obesity. Imagine consuming between three and four cups per week - every week.

How would it feel to know your parents, children, and friends were as well?

Finally, what would you think if you knew the conventional wisdom for managing these resulting health problems dictated eating a diet containing more of the substance that contributed to their development in the first place?

The Healthy Way of Eating

So long food pyramid. Life Time’s version of the famous triangle has given way to a bold new infographic. Beyond the vivid design itself (which makes for a great t-shirt, by the way), the image offers a visual story for the Healthy Way of Eating philosophy.

You could say the mixed colors and fonts of the graphic suggest the inherent variety of a healthful diet. The varied script, however, also illustrate the concepts of balance and proportion in our diets--the priorities we should bring to our eating each day. While the image serves as a great conversation starter, there's more to the infographic story. For those interested in a little more detail, we're happy to offer that below. You can dig even deeper by downloading the new version of our core nutrition manual Eat Well. Live Well. and by reading more of the articles on Life Time’s website.

Little by little, our goal is to generate more awareness of what a healthy diet looks like. We think the infographic is one more dimension of that message. The image--as well as the results-quickly speak for themselves.

200 Health and Fitness Tips for Our 200th Issue of Flourish

The blog posts on the Life Time Weight Loss site started as a Microsoft Outlook weekly newsletter for our Health and Fitness Professionals. Issue 1 was sent out February 15, 2009. Fitness, nutrition and weight management is a subject that’s always refined by new research. We learn more every year about how we can optimize our health and more easily achieve the type of body we want. Even though we learn more, we continue to battle against the obesity epidemic and a growing number of health complications in our population. Our goal with these blog posts, and the Flourish newsletter is to provide inspiration and education to help our readers make better decisions every day.

Since February of 2009, I’ve written between one and three articles every week. The more research I’ve read to write the articles, the more I’ve realized how confused people must be by the misinformation or half-truths they’re exposed to each day. I hope that 200 issues from now, we’ll have made greater strides in informing the public about what good nutrition, lifestyle and exercise choices really are. As I thought about what to write for issue 200, I thought I’d do something a little different. I sat down and typed out 200 thoughts I’ve shared with people over the years as they asked questions about nutrition and weight management. It’s a pretty long list.

I hope you find a few nuggets to take with you or share. Once you get through the list, I’d love it if you could share one or two of the 200 ideas and thoughts in the comments section below. Tell us which ones mean the most to you.
