How to Detoxify Your Kitchen

At Life Time, we emphasize the importance of “clean eating,” but it’s ultimately about more than what’s on the menu. Sure, we want to prioritize unprocessed, nutritionally dense food and minimize our exposure to additives, toxins, and pathogens. The eating clean commitment extends beyond the food itself, however. Both where it came from and how we prepare it influence a food’s nutritional profile as well as its toxin content. For instance, we diminish the benefits of purchasing organic, free-range foods if we prepare them in a chemically contaminated kitchen. Let’s take apart the idea of “detoxifying” our kitchen with a focus on the three basics: food, cleaners, and cookware.

Is Bug Spray Dangerous?

We’re entering bug season – the wet, warm weather that breeds everyone’s favorite pests: mosquitos, ticks, and deer flies. If you live near the woods, like we do, it seems you’re constantly waving your arms around, slamming the fly swatter down, or picking ticks off yourself, family members, or pets! Many of us use bug “protection” in the forms of sprays, lotions, liquids or infused wrist bands. What are the health risks of our choices, however? About one-third of adults and children currently use bug repellent products. Let’s examine the active ingredients in these formulations, their potential health impacts and the overall pros and cons. Finally, let’s look at safety tips for repellent use and healthier alternatives to conventional bug repellent products.

Detox Made Simple: Part 3

In part one of this series on detoxification, I uncovered the common sources of toxins we encounter in our everyday lives and the ways our body naturally detoxifies itself. Last week in part two, I shared how inefficiencies in the body’s capacity to detoxify can negatively impact our weight, body composition, and overall health. Today, I’ll highlight some popular detoxification programs and compare their approaches to Life Time’s very own D.TOX plan. As healthy as detoxification can be, not every regimen is safe and/or effective. I’ll also share the amazing results we found in participants who tested our D.TOX plan and fill you in on how you can get started with your very own D.TOX.

10 Takeaways from the Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo

I recently had the opportunity to attend the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE) in Philadelphia. This is the largest annual gathering for food and nutrition professionals across the globe and includes several hundred exhibitors, with more than 100 presentations, panel discussions and demonstrations. It’s been several years since I last attended the conference so I was curious to find out some of the latest research and products, and connect with my peers. I came away with several positives, some frustrating disappointments, and a few questions about the current state of our profession. Here are the 10 big takeaways for me.
