Longevity and Vitality Series, Part 1: Focusing Your Aim

Recently, the group I work with (an extremely talented and passionate bunch) was discussing how there can be such a disparity between the healthiest, most vitality-filled people on the planet and the larger group of people who fit into the category considered “healthy” simply because they lack immediate symptoms of disease. As it is, he vast majority of people are free of known chronic diseases but are blindly headed down the path towards prescription-directed symptom management for more than half their time on earth. When did we develop so many statin, venlaflaxine, famotidine deficiencies? When did kids start getting diseases of old age? What’s wrong with our definition of “healthy” when so few people know what it is to physically thrive? What can we do to envision--let alone claim--a richer experience of wellness for ourselves?

The Power of Paradigm Shifting

On a recent commute, I was listening to the late Steven Covey explain his thoughts on the power of paradigms. In his well known book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, he explains how our paradigms, the ways we see the world, can shape our experiences of success and happiness. It got me thinking about how our paradigms likewise influence our healthy journeys--for better and worse. The paradigms we hold about wellness can hold tremendous sway over our ability to manage our weight and to achieve optimal health.

Ready, Set, Change!

Have you ever set out to change and failed?  Most people have at least once.  Change is one of the most difficult actions we embark on, especially when trying to attempt lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking or losing weight.  And if you’ve thought “you just weren’t ready to change” after a failed attempt, you were absolutely right.  In fact, one important thing people fail to do before they attempt change is spend time identifying “how ready” they are to make that change.  Being coached through a behavior tool referred as the “readiness-to-change” model, has given my clients their best and most permanent results.  Got a change to make?  Read on below to learn what stage of change you are currently in as well as the right tactics to get you to complete it!

How Nutritionally Independent Are You?

Written By Anika DeCoster - Asst. Program Manager, LifeTime WeightLoss

July is officially here, bringing us the dog days of summer along with one of our nation’s most celebrated holidays.  For many of us, Independence Day not only means fireworks and sparklers, but also celebrating the freedom that many people have fought for, and continue to fight for.  During this time of year, I encourage my clients to fully practice complete nutritional independence — a key term that many didn’t even know existed.  Being nutritionally independent means you have your bases covered when it comes to promoting an optimal diet and health.  It’s taking pride in one’s health and acknowledging that being healthy is a personal choice we have to make each and every day when it comes to what we eat.  But how nutritionally independent are you?  Read on below to uncover defining tips and see where you stack up!

The Healthy Way of Life Food Pyramid - Part 1

Depending on where you get your information, changing your nutrition habits can seem daunting, confusing and frustrating. No wonder the average person gives up and falls back on their Standard American Diet habits. Even on this site, in the process of trying to share the latest and greatest information about nutrition and metabolism, we can leave people feeling unsure of where to begin. With today’s article, and an additional one next week, I’m going to explain our healthy way of life food pyramid, how easy it is to use it, and the steps you should take to most dramatically change your level of energy, your performance and how you look on the outside. Look at these articles as simple starting points. I’ve provided additional references below, but take it one step at a time. Keep it simple and adopt each new habit before moving along to the next.

Big Challenge? Start Small.

Hey, 90-Day Challengers!  We are a few weeks into our 90-Day Challenge and although we might have our heads still wrapped around our ultimate goal, have you given thought to any small changes to get you there? Often, when we start a weight loss competition, many of us will try to tackle any and every obstacle that has had a direct impact on our weight.  And for many of us, this leads to biting off way more than we can chew, often ending in low success or even giving up.  This week’s challenge is to see beyond that and give the idea of small changes a chance!

Master Your Mindset: Simple Thinking to Conquer Any Goal

Henry Ford once said, “whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” Around this time of year, the momentum behind New Year’s resolutions (and now the Life Time Weight Loss 90-Day Challenge) begins to fade. I’ve seen Life Time’s fitness floors, studios, gyms,  and locker rooms look frighteningly full in January and early February, only to resemble something more like a library or funeral home come early March. It’s sad, and I came into this industry to help change that, so here are my helpful secrets.

In my experience, there is no shortage of diet resources, information, schools of thought, or simple solutions that attempt to make the “healthy eating” formula as easy as possible for us. Heck, we have hundreds of articles on this website, healthy cafes, and even accountability programs to help you avoid falling off the wagon! It’s maddening. It’s confusing. It works for some, but maybe not yet for you.
