Slim Down Secret From a Trainer (Who’s Also a Dietitian)

As a dietitian and trainer, I’m asked frequently, “How many calories should I be eating to lose weight?” and, “What are the best types of ab exercises to do to lose belly fat?”

One of the most effective methods for shedding body fat and helping sculpt the ideal physique does not lie in cutting calories and spending countless hours doing cardio. For some of you, it may mean doing the opposite of what you think.

My secret: Add strength training. 

Strength training has always been a component of my health and fitness routine.

Collegiate Athlete: When competing in college, strength training was part of my track team’s weekly workout program. It not only complimented my anaerobic cardio workouts, but prevented injuries and kept my endurance up.

Post-College Triathlete: After college, I dabbled in more endurance activities such as triathlons, half-marathons, and marathons. I found myself on the slippery slope of dedicating time to cardio and initially not enough to strength training (bad move). After quickly learning (the hard way) to offset my cardio with strength training, my performance improved immensely.
